The Lighthouse Keeper's Daughter

The fog came in the way grief does: slowly, then all at once. Maren watched it swallow the harbor lights, one by one, until only the beam remained.

"Slowly, then all at once." This lands beautifully. Keep it.

Features

Everything a writer needs,
and nothing that gets in the way.

PenPal mixes a distraction-free writing desk with the warmth of old-fashioned letters, and keeps it all protected with modern cryptography.

Encrypted private letters

Every chat, letter and shared draft is encrypted on your device before it's sent. Your keys stay with you, so your words reach your pen pal and nobody else.

  • ✓Zero-knowledge architecture
  • ✓Disappearing letters & verified contacts
  • ✓Independently audited protocol

Kindred matching

Match on genre, craft goals, time zone and writing rhythm. No swiping, no follower counts. Just people whose sentences you'll love.

The Writing Desk

A quiet, beautiful editor with focus mode, version history, word goals and margin notes your pen pals can leave.

Circles

Small, invite-only groups of 3 to 12 writers for workshops, sprints and critique swaps, with gentle structure built in.

The Idea Jar

Drop in half-formed ideas, prompts and what-ifs. Share them with a pen pal and watch a spark turn into a story.

The product

One home for your words,
and the people who read them.

Write in peace. Share when you're ready.

Focus mode hides everything except the page. When a draft is ready, share one paragraph or the whole thing with a pen pal and get margin notes back.

  • ✦Focus, typewriter & night modes
  • ✦Inline margin notes from pen pals
  • ✦Daily word goals & streaks

She kept the letters in a biscuit tin, each one smelling faintly of salt and cedar, as if the sea had read them first.

AYAya left a note

"As if the sea had read them first." I'd steal this line if I could.

Why PenPal

Writing is lonely.
It doesn't have to be.

Stories

Letters from our writers

I wrote my first novel one letter at a time to a stranger in Lisbon. She's now my closest friend and my first reader. PenPal gave me both.

FAQ

Questions, answered

How private are my letters, really?

Very. Messages, letters and shared drafts are end-to-end encrypted with keys that only exist on your devices. Our servers only ever see scrambled ciphertext, so we can't read your work, and we couldn't hand it over even if someone asked. Our protocol is audited by an independent firm every year.

How does pen pal matching work?

You tell us your genres, craft goals, time zone and how often you like to write back, plus a short writing sample if you want to. Each week we suggest a few writers. You both have to say yes before any letters can be sent.

Will my writing be used to train AI?

Never. Your words belong to you. We don't train models on your content, we don't sell data and we don't show ads. Encryption means we couldn't access your writing even if we wanted to.

Is PenPal safe for meeting strangers?

Safety comes first. Introductions need consent on both sides, you can use a pen name, and blocking and reporting take one tap. Our human trust team reviews every report, and our community guidelines put kindness first.

Can I cancel or export my work anytime?

Yes. You can cancel in two clicks, and you can export all your drafts and letters as Markdown, DOCX or PDF whenever you like. If you downgrade, you keep everything, even past the free plan limits.

Do you offer student or educator discounts?

Yes. Students and educators get 50% off any paid plan. MFA programs and writing nonprofits can contact us about free Salon licenses.
